For the past five years, over 400 media executives have come together at an exclusive location for an event like no other in the advertising industry: TubeMogul University. The invite-only summit features luminaries and researchers alongside brand and agency leaders that are helping shape the future of marketing. For the second year in a row, the three-day conference was held at quiet and peaceful Lake Tahoe, California.
The event opened with a nice and relaxing “Into the Woods”-themed dinner to let everyone meet and mingle in a casual setting after a long day of travel. The next morning, the early risers enjoyed their choice of yoga on the beach or boot camp to start off the day. The conference began at 9am sharp, with our CEO & co-founder Brett Wilson kicking off a packed day of content with an inspiring discussion about the future of advertising which you can view below. The constant theme across all the topics was transparency, which resonated strongly with all the attendees and allowed open and candid conversation about the industry at large. This year we made a point to more deeply integrate our clients in the content so the attendees could hear their peers on stage talking about their experiences, successes and challenges. We closed the day with an awe-inspiring keynote speech from Jim Stengel, former Global Marketing Officer of Procter & Gamble, who gave an empowering presentation on courageous leadership.
After the content finished, attendees broke for happy hours based on their geographic location. These happy hours focused on bringing clients and colleagues from the same region together, allowing them the opportunity to network with peers. Once the happy hours were finished, it was time for the “Hip Hops” dinner, a themed dinner that married hip-hop and beer – need I say more! The food and music were a huge success, and just when people thought it couldn’t get any better, our CEO Brett made a grand entrance and skydived into the dinner. Yes, you read that correctly: he jumped out of a plane from over 10,000 feet and landed expertly on the beach in front of 400 stunned onlookers! The crowd went wild! Thankfully, he landed safely with the help of three skilled Red Bull skydivers that accompanied him on his epic jump. After this fun surprise we all danced the night away enjoying great conversation, the DJ and photo booth!
The next morning there was a noticeable drop in the number of yoga and boot camp participants… probably due to all the fun they had the prior evening! Still, we had another packed house when the second day of content began. The content was just as engaging as the day prior, with a live demonstration of how our Cross-Screen Planner helps marketers find cost-effective incremental reach as well as a big reveal of major design upgrades to our platform’s Placement Editor. The event content concluded with an electric keynote from the one-and-only Bonin Bough, host of CNBC’s Cleveland Hustles and former Chief Media & eCommerce Officer of Mondelēz International. He discussed the personal investment required to drive change within an organization; the entire audience was mesmerized by his captivating delivery and dynamic stage presence.
After the end of the content, it was time for afternoon activities before the final dinner. Regrettably, the weather did not cooperate and we had to abandon our planned water activities outside and move our “La Playa”-themed dinner indoors as it was very chilly and windy. Despite the last-minute change in plans, everyone still had a great time, complete with a live Latin band, cigar rolling and amazing food. People danced and made merry until the early hours of the morning, and then bade bleary-eyed farewells as they made their way back to their respective homes across the U.S. and Canada.
All in all, the event was a huge success, and many of the repeat attendees agreed that this was the best TubeMogul University yet! So until next year, cheers to TubeU 2016!
