Brightcove and TubeMogul Q4 Quarterly Report: Brand Engagement Up 98%; Facebook Growing 11.7% Per Month in Streams Referred

Today, we are once again excited to launch the latest installment in our quarterly research with Brightcove, which analyzes billions of video streams every quarter from the top brands and media companies, highlighting trends. The full report can be accessed here. Among the findings from Q4:

  • Both viewing-time and completion rates are up across categories compared to last quarter. Completions are up 5.7% per category on average.
  • Newspapers uploaded 147% more videos than the previous quarter as they continue to ramp up production.
  • Brands saw a 98% jump in average viewing-time, reaching 2:03 minutes on average — higher growth than any other category. Overall views also grew significantly, as brands more than doubled viewers.
  • The biggest gains in viewing times for brands hailed from the European Union (which grew 198% compared to the previous quarter), and the Asia-Pacific region (which grew 121%).
  • Facebook is now responsible for over one in ten referred video views, a number growing by 11.17% per month (Yahoo is shrinking 6.2%). Viewers also tend to watch longer when coming from Facebook across categories.
  • Brands see 98% growth for on-site viewing

    The Media Kitchen Names TubeMogul to Elite List of Companies Poised to Transform Advertising and Marketing

    We are pleased and to report that The Media Kitchen, a leading communications agency, named TubeMogul to “The Menu,” a recently-launched annual list of 12 companies that, in the company’s view, are being “adopted fundamentally and foundationally by Madison Avenue” and are poised to transform advertising and marketing.     TubeMogul PlayTime Now Top 10 Web-Wide in Video Ads Served

    comScore Video Metrix rankings for the month of December were released today, and we are pleased to report that TubeMogul PlayTime, our intelligent media buying platform for agencies and brands, is now in the top ten across the entire Internet for video ads viewed, an elite list that includes CBS, Google and Hulu.

    In December, PlayTime video ads were viewed 174,062,000 times according to comScore, reaching over one in ten Americans. Since launching in almost a year ago and premiering in comScore several months ago, PlayTime has grown rapidly, signing hundreds of brand clients, winning a Streaming Media Reader’s Choice Award in November and climbing the rankings each month.

    Brightcove and TubeMogul Q3 Research: Facebook Surpasses Yahoo in Streams Referred; Viewing-Times Longest on Game Consoles

    We are excited to launch the latest installment of our quarterly research on online video trends with Brightcove, just in time for the holidays! The full report, accessible here, includes new metrics (breakouts by browser, device) and a special section on views and viewing-time by day of the week and time of day.

    Some highlights from the report:

  • Facebook surpassed Yahoo! in number of video streams referred, making them second now only to Google in volume of streams discovered via their site.
  • Newspapers saw significant growth in the number of titles uploaded (51% growth) and surpassed broadcasters in total minutes streamed for the first time this quarter.
  • In terms of average viewing-time, game consoles (i.e. Wii, PlayStation) lead PCs by 18 seconds and smartphones (i.e. iPhones) by 43 seconds.
  • Viewers watch longest on weekends, but views peak during the work-week. Broadcasters get their most views on Mondays and Tuesdays (30.25% of their weekly), while other categories peak mid-to-late week.

    PlayTime Named Best Online Video Platform by Streaming Media

    We are proud to report that PlayTime, our video advertising platform, won best “Video Advertising Management Platform” at Streaming Media West in Los Angeles. Apparently this year was the most active on record, with, with over 7,000 clients of various companies casting over 58,000 votes. Categories are as diverse as online video itself. The category we won, “Video Advertising Management Platform,” had some pretty detailed requirements, including “pre-built placement options and detailed success tracking.”

    TubeMogul OneLoad Now Works Seamlessly With New Twitter

    One of the great features of TubeMogul OneLoad is social network cross-posting, an often-overlooked feature that allows users to automatically update their Facebook and Twitter statuses with a link to their video as soon as it goes live.

    We updated this feature to work seamlessly with Twitter’s new on-site video feature, which automatically embeds videos directly within a user’s feed (i.e. inset).

    We just announced that TubeMogul closed $10 million in Series B funding from Foundation Capital and Trinity Ventures. Ashu Garg, who helped build Microsoft’s ad platform from the ground up, will join existing board members Ajay Chopra, Dick Costolo and Dave Toth. Expect new features in all of our products in the coming months, as well as new metrics quantifying both advertising effectiveness and audience measurement for publishers.
