Brightcove and TubeMogul Q3 Research: Facebook Surpasses Yahoo in Streams Referred; Viewing-Times Longest on Game Consoles

We are excited to launch the latest installment of our quarterly research on online video trends with Brightcove, just in time for the holidays! The full report, accessible here, includes new metrics (breakouts by browser, device) and a special section on views and viewing-time by day of the week and time of day.

Some highlights from the report:

  • Facebook surpassed Yahoo! in number of video streams referred, making them second now only to Google in volume of streams discovered via their site.
  • Newspapers saw significant growth in the number of titles uploaded (51% growth) and surpassed broadcasters in total minutes streamed for the first time this quarter.
  • In terms of average viewing-time, game consoles (i.e. Wii, PlayStation) lead PCs by 18 seconds and smartphones (i.e. iPhones) by 43 seconds.
  • Viewers watch longest on weekends, but views peak during the work-week. Broadcasters get their most views on Mondays and Tuesdays (30.25% of their weekly), while other categories peak mid-to-late week.
