Amid the seemingly endless supply of music videos and cleavage-popping vloggers fetching the highest view counts across video sharing sites, one category of video consistently makes our weekly leaderboard, often escaping notice: soccer highlights, attesting to the increasingly international face of YouTube as well as DailyMotion‘s emergence as a driver of views (for those who haven’t heard, DailyMotion is the YouTube of Europe, to oversimplify). Amid copyright infringement allegations, a number of YouTube’s most-viewed soccer clips were removed this week. As an open-minded American (I live in Berkeley, after all), I want to love soccer, but the dry Irish and British commentators make the sport almost morose to watch. When I watch on Univision, however, every pass is pivotal.
