Video Classifieds Could Be Huge
March 20th, 2008
MediaPost’s Video Insider has an interesting post about the potential of online video classifieds. Having just survived apartment seeking in Berkeley, I can attest to the need for this (blurry, cherry-picked pictures of an apartment can be very misleading), and am surprised it hasn’t taken off. Currently, Craigslist doesn’t allow video embeds (lame), despite the plethora of video sharing sites that could host the videos for free. Some local newspapers are stepping into the fray, as are several newer sites like RealPeopleRealStuff.com and iMoondo.com. But Craigslist’s dominance isn’t likely to go away, precisely because they are so dominant–the benefits of everyone posting/viewing classifieds in the same place can often outweigh how cool the classified site is (economists call this “network externalities”) which, alas, leaves us at Craigslist’s mercy.

Glad to hear that some of you out there are recognizing the need for video classifieds! We think it could be huge too, and mostly we think it can be very helpful for people selling cars, houses, the rental market (as you mentioned), proving something mechanical works (think lawnmower or vacuum), or showcasing your business.
That’s why we added video to our classifieds site, Listasaurus.com. Also, we don’t require video–it’s just a nice option if someone wants to add it…and it doesn’t have to be embedded either, it can be uploaded directly. We also pay users to list ads in eligible categories. Something no one else is doing out there!
While craigslist is the dominant force right now for online classifieds, believe it or not there are still a lot of people who don’t know about the site, and we think there’s room for a little competition! (remember a little guy named Google who came on the scene when Yahoo and MSN were already big guns).
Anyway thought you might like to know about us, and we’d love to hear feedback from you guys out there about Listasaurus.com!
I guess we’ll all have to wait and see how video classifieds take off. We think it may take a while, but it’s time is coming…

vflyer offers a craigslist friendly flyer that has a video link on it. Now, if we could get either wellcomemat distribution through tube mogul or vflyer to accept the api of one of tubemogul’s affiliates, we would be in business!!

As everyone knows by now, video is very exciting. I think in the next few years people will discover that video is appropriate for certain areas of the consumer market, right now it seems like everyone wants to use video for everything. I think the small business arena will benefit the most from video which is pretty much the thesis behind Jippidy.
